What Is The Best Kit Car Ever Made

We, car enthusiasts, don’t usually like kit cars. Kit cars are most often trying to impersonate legendary cars by cutting corning corners here and there, a bit like a fake Timex watch from NYC’s Chinatown.

Some kit cars, however, are actually not bad at all, even interesting. What is the most insane kit car ever made ?

Yeah! Those stupid kit cars! FWD also sucks, of course.

Wouldn’t call Fiskers kit cars, they’re really coachbuilds.

Great kit cars? Pretty much everything Factory Five has done, Caterham’s range of DIY Sevens, a lot of Locost builds, Ultima GTR, the Meyers Manx, Local Motors Rally Fighter...the list is long.

Doesn’t the Rally Fighter use body panels from the Honda Crosstour?

Okay...so my mind is exploding right now.

HPE Velociraptor, with the rear end of an Excursion.

Why do I want this?!?!?!?

Most of what Factory Five puts together is good stuff, from what I’ve read and seen of a couple completed Cobra kits. My friend is in the process of building a FF Cobra and it should be a fun little car when it’s done.

I’d love to put together their GTM Supercar or Type 65 (Shelby Daytona replica) one day.

As the type of car enthusiast who is probably more wrench than driver, I’m a fan of (well designed and well built) car kits. I still cringe at the tacky shit just like everyone else, though.

There are some good Cobras out there. But the best ever is this one:

Kinja'd!!!

Based on a C3 Corvette and made by McBurnie Coachcraft.

However

... In 2012 McBurnie sold his company to Carrera Coachwerks partners Theo Hanson and Alan Cassell. Anticipating a dispute with Porsche, the name was changed to Custom Coachwerks in 2013 or 2014. However, the El Cajon, CA shop was subsequently closed and assets divided by the partners.

Because it needs to exist!

Seriously, people can complain about the excess of the excursions, but I never saw one not being utilized to its maximum capacity at least semi regularly. Playing hockey, I saw parents with 3-4 kids (plus their friends) arrive to games in one with all their equipment. I knew others that would use theirs to haul horse and car trailers plus the family (mom and daughter did equestrian and dad raced cars). The excursion should still exist for those that will use it and at then why not have a raptor version.

I have a feeling the conversion will be dying out now that the f-150 is aluminum.

Not really sure how it could. Front and rear are different shapes. 2 door versus 4 door. The platform can’t even be the same since the LM RF is RWD and the crosstour is FWD/AWD.

I think the Excursion should still exist just for the sheer size of the thing. It’s one of those vehicles that are impressively large.

I expect a Hummer to be huge...but the Excursion has always been one of those SUVs that always make me go “woah, I don’t remember them being this big”.

Shelby Cobra.

It’s an AC Ace with a different engine (and some other parts). Many kit cars are just vehicles short of an engine/transmission, so it fits.

It does use Civic tail lights. I’d be surprised about the body panels.
